Rockefeller University Research Assistant in New York, New York

Job: IRC27882

Job Title Research Assistant

Laboratory / Department Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language

Department Description

Speech and language are quintessential human traits. Yet remarkably, humans share many behavioral, neuroanatomical, and genetic similarities with other distantly related vocal learning species, like songbirds and cetaceans. In the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language, we are investigating the evolutionary, developmental, and functional origins of these similarities at the level of neural circuits using a variety of model organisms and experimental approaches.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will join our diverse and multidisciplinary lab in order to assist various projects investigating the formation of vocal learning-like neural circuits in genetically engineered mice. The overall goal of this project is to better understand how specific genes influence the formation of vocal learning-like circuits that are found across widely divergent species. Responsibilities include conducting histology experiments (cyrosectioning, immunostaining, imaging), gene engineering, PCR for genotyping, mouse husbandry, and conducting training and/or observing animal behavior.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree required; educational emphasis in biology, chemistry, or other life sciences field preferred. Must have experience in neurophysiology and a willingness to work with small animals. Must also have experience or exposure to coding and a technical ability to troubleshoot experiments. Must have excellent lab and time management skills, be detail-oriented, as well as strong communication (verbal and written) skills. Molecular biology, electrophysiology and/or surgical experience are a plus.
